1.6.2022 | The Hietalahti Market Square terrace and the legendary Hietsu flea market were opened on Saturday 4 June 2022. The offerings of the market square terrace consist of the summery delicacies of the restaurants of Hietalahti Market Hall. At weekends, the terrace features flea market activities that are now organised in a new way.
“Good food and beverages, bargains on wonderful vintage items and live entertainment, such as jazz! This is the very kind of content with which many market squares, such as those of London, have become global phenomena that attract locals and tourists alike,” says Managing Director Peggy Bauer from Helsinki City Premises Ltd, the company organising market square terrace operations in Helsinki.
The summertime food and beverage offerings are provided by the restaurateurs of Hietalahti Market Hall. Piilo, Petiscaria, Aperol Spritz Bar, Robert’s Coffee, Fat Ramen and Döner Harju all have outdoor sales points on the market square. All of the nine restaurants of the Market Hall provide takeout food and beverages to be enjoyed on the joint terrace.
“The restaurants of Hietalahti Market Hall are our city’s hidden gem, and the time has come to let that gem shine!” says an elated Bauer.
The legendary Hietsu flea market is also continuing its operation on Hietalahti Market Square after a few-year hiatus – albeit in a slightly overhauled format. The flea market is held as part of the terrace activities every weekend. The flea market activities and stall reservations are handled by the OPSHOP HELSINKI self-service flea market, which operates by Hietalahti Market Square. There are around 50 vending stalls on the market square, intended for private households for selling their own second-hand items.
Terrace activities also on Töölö Market Square and Havis Amanda Square
In addition to Hietalahti Market Square, Töölö Market Square and Havis Amanda Square also have their own business-run market square terraces this summer.
The Töölö Market Square terraces were already opened at the end of May, and their offerings are provided by the local restaurants B5 Black, Mamma Rosa, Green Hippo, Tin Tin Tango, Pretty Boy Wingery and Gelatteria. In addition to the restaurants, Töölö Market Square also features conventional market stalls, such as market cafés and vegetable and flower vendors.
The centre of the market square features a small stage that will feature various performances over the course of the summer and that Helsinki residents can reserve for their own use free of charge. For example, on Saturday 4 June, summer was declared to have arrived at the Suvivirsi soi choir singing event. The main speaker of the event was Lilli Paasikivi, the Artistic Director of the Finnish National Opera.
The Havis Amanda Square terrace, on the other hand, is planned to be opened on Helsinki Day, 12 June. It will be operated by the restaurants Helsinki Bryggeri and Sofia Helsinki.
